Ramps4Champs

BSDA IS PARTNER IN RAMPS4CHAMPS PROJECT
16.09.2022
The main output of the Ramps4Champs project is a guide on how to organise safe and inclusive Boccia BC3 activities including both people with disabilities and their able-bodied peers. To achieve this trainers and coaches will be trained on delivering Boccia BC3 activities but also on first aid and secondary care for people with disabilities.
Boccia is a Paralympic sport designed for athletes with high support needs. It is played indoors and can be played individually, in pairs, or in teams of three; it is mix-gender and the aim is to throw balls as close as possible to a white marker ball. BC3 is a Boccia classification played by athletes with significant limitations in arm and leg functions, such as tetraplegia and myopathies. They use a ramp to release the ball with the support of an assistant. Boccia is a truly inclusive sport that can be played by anyone regardless of their disability, age, or gender. The objective of the project is to promote Boccia BC3 in schools, organisations, and sports clubs in order to encourage participation of people with disabilities, especially those with severe mobility limitations in sport activities, who otherwise would not have many opportunities to exercise. At the moment, there are no guidelines or protocols in place on how to organise such activities, thus, the project’s outputs are innovative and original and will be highly useful to a large number of organisations inside and outside of the partner countries.

Ramps4Champs aims at encouraging participation of people with all types of disabilities, especially those with severe mobility disabilities, in health-enhancing activities. This will be achieved through Boccia BC3, a classification of the Paralympic game Boccia, played by athletes with significant limitations in arm and leg functions, such as tetraplegia and myopathies. BC3 is a truly inclusive game that allows people of all abilities, genders, and ages to play together.

Throughout the project trainers, coaches, and volunteers will be trained on Boccia BC3 as well as on first aid and secondary care provision. Twelve local activities will take place in the partner countries where people with disabilities will play together with their able bodied peers, learn a new sport and connect with people in their community.

Finally, the project will design, develop, and disseminate a guide on how to organise safe and inclusive BC3 activities. At the moment, there are no specific guidelines or protocols on the organisation of Boccia BC3 with inter-abled groups. Moreover, three of the partner countries do not have any BC3 athletes competing due to the lack of proper equipment. As a result, the Ramps4Champs guide will provide coaches and trainers inside and outside of the consortium with specific guidelines to consult in case they want to organise inclusive BC3 games. Additionally, BC3 equipment will be purchased and distributed to the partners who will share it with their members and communities even after the end of the project.

Ramps4Champs initiative is co-funded by the ErasmusPlus programme of the European Union.
