15.12.2023
From December 13th to 15th, 2023, in Athens, Greece, the final partner meeting took place within the project "An educational and training program for older adults at risk of developing dementia through table tennis /hAlt/". During this meeting, partners discussed the activities realized within the project, which examines how sports activities can contribute to improving the lives and well-being of individuals with Alzheimer's. Table tennis is one of the most engaging brain activities, and even older players can enjoy playing it. This sport positively impacts physical activity levels, improves attention and concentration, and enhances visual-spatial skills.
Due to these characteristics and the accessibility of this sport, it has been proven that table tennis can be effectively used as a preventive and rehabilitative program for individuals suffering from or predisposed to Alzheimer's disease and dementia, as it simultaneously activates different sections of the brain.

The aim of the project "An educational and training program for older adults at risk of developing dementia through table tennis /hAlt/", which encompassed research and practical activities, is realized in collaboration with table tennis clubs, sports organizations, sports universities, and other interested parties. Its objective is to increase awareness regarding the mental health benefits of practicing table tennis among older adults. Another primary goal of the initiative is to engage individuals suffering from or predisposed to Alzheimer's disease and dementia in sports activities, specifically table tennis. It also aims to provide specialized training to table tennis coaches certified as "coaches with knowledge and specific skills for Alzheimer's disease and dementia". Simultaneously, the project monitors their bio-physical activity through portable devices and a linked gamification application to support socialization and attract a larger number of participants/users.

The project "An educational and training program for older adults at risk of developing dementia through table tennis /hAlt/" is co-funded by the Erasmus+ program of the European Union, with the Bulgarian Sports Development Association serving as a partner from Bulgaria.
