08.06.2024
On the 8th of June, 2024, the women's team of NSA Vasil Levski finished the season in a fitting way, defeating rivals Sofia Ladies with a score of 10:0 in a match of the last 26th round of the women's football championship. The girls, led by head coach Valentina Gospodinova – 16-time champion of Bulgaria with NSA Vasil Levski and with over 100 international matches for the national teams of Bulgaria (girls and women), supported the SMS – Strong Mind for Success initiative.
#SMS is a joint initiative, co-funded by Erasmus+, aiming to build capacity in sport organizations nowadays in the field of mental care awareness and care towards youth athletes. Strong Mind for Success project delivers innovative education on how mental health can contribute for the successful development of young football players in Bulgaria, Italy and Slovenia.

An hour prior to the game, during the warm-up, the players went out on the field wearing #SMS project t-shirts. This initiative uses the knowledge gathered from the results of the objectives and policies from the European Action Plans on Mental Health and focuses on educating young football players on mental health awareness.

The target group of the project are young boys and girls up to the age of 18, as this age period is crucial for the psychological development of the athletes. The relevance and need for such project is supported by the scarce data not only on the impact of sport on mental health, but also the reverse – how mental health can support preparation and quality performance on the field.

The Strong Mind for Success project will analyse aspects of how we can use mental health to prepare players to achieve quality results on the field and, hopefully, at professional level. With this project we aim to further develop the skills of managers on how to approach the mental health aspects of their players, and hopefully with the help of mental health experts we will introduce a more holistic approach to the player’s preparation.
