P.E.rfect training for working with children with autism spectrum disorders
01.10.2024
On October 1st, 2024, at the "Vasil Levski" National Sports Academy in Sofia, a national training was held under the title "An Autism and Behaviour Management training for P.E. School Teachers" (P.E.rfect), organized by Bulgarian sports development association. The event aimed to improve the competences of coaches, sports specialists and physical education teachers for working with children with autism spectrum disorders in order to include them more effectively in the education system and sports activities. The training provided participants with practical and theoretical guidance that will help them integrate these students into the learning environment in the most appropriate way.
The guest lecturer of the training was Assoc. Prof. Kornelia Naydenova, lecturer at the Faculty of Pedagogy at the Department of Theory of Physical Education at the National Sports Academy. The training presented the main theories and approaches related to behaviour management in children with autism spectrum disorders and focused on the current trends for inclusion of these children in school and sports activities. Special attention was paid to the importance of adapted physical activity as a tool for their socialization and personal development.

The P.E.rfect project has been developed to provide PE teachers with the specific knowledge and skills needed to work with children with special educational needs, in particular those who have been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders. The training focused on the importance of creating an inclusive learning environment that meets the specific needs of each child. Teachers and sports professionals present had the opportunity to review and test the specially developed e-learning platform that was created within the project. The platform provides a variety of resources, strategies and materials that can be used to put the latest and most effective methodologies into practice.

P.E.rfect is supported by the Erasmus+ programme of the European Union, and its mission is to create a sustainable training system for PE teachers from different countries. In addition to Bulgaria, partner organisations from Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Ireland, Spain, Poland and the Republic of North Macedonia are involved in the project. International cooperation ensures sharing of good practices and experiences, as well as adapting proven effective approaches to local conditions and specificities.

An important aspect of the programme is the promotion of cross-sectoral collaboration between different professional communities – sports professionals, psychologists, educators and social workers. By building a strong network of trained professionals, the project aims to facilitate the process of inclusion of children with autism in the sport environment, providing conditions for their equal participation and successful social integration.

The P.E.rfect program is based on scientifically proven methodologies and principles that contribute to more effective behavior management and motivation of children with autism in the context of physical education. The use of physical exercise as a tool to develop the cognitive, social and emotional skills of children with special needs is a key element of this approach. By promoting physical activity, the programme aims not only to improve children's physical fitness but also to contribute to their emotional well-being and social adjustment.

Among the topics covered during the training were different approaches to working with parents and caregivers of children with autism. Involving the family in the sports integration process is considered an important factor in the success of the initiative, as joint efforts between teachers, coaches and parents lead to better outcomes for children.

The project has the potential to improve the quality of physical education teaching while providing a better learning environment for children with special educational needs. In the long term, these initiatives are expected to contribute to a more inclusive and equitable education system that provides equal opportunities for all students, regardless of their specific needs and abilities.
