European Week of Winter Sport
International training under the European Week of Winter Sport project in Croatia
18.11.2024
In the period 14–18 November 2024 in Rijeka, Croatia, an international training course under the "European Week of Winter Sport – EWWS” (#BeWinterActive) project was held. The event brought together sports organisations from eight European countries to discuss opportunities to promote physical activity during the winter season through sustainable sports practices and raising awareness on climate change.
The project aims to make winter sports more accessible and eco-friendly, while highlighting their role in improving physical, emotional and mental health. Sustainability is set in the heart of the initiative – through education, outreach and introduction of best practices, participants focus on ways to reduce the environmental footprint of sporting events.
The first pilot edition of the European Week of Winter Sport is going to take place in the period 01–08 February 2025 in Belgium, Bulgaria, Germany, Italy, Croatia, Luxembourg, Slovenia and Spain.
Key activities include the organisation of the “European Week of Winter Sport” (#BeWinterActive Week), the creation of manuals and video tutorials for the organisation of sport events and the training of local ambassadors from each participating country. In addition, the project foresees local pilot events and competitions for the best sustainable solutions and promotional videos aimed at promoting winter sports.
The created materials and campaigns will be shared with a wide range of sports organisations and experts in Europe in order to strengthen the link between winter sport, tourism and sustainable development. Particular attention is going to be paid to developing zero-impact events and raising awareness of climate change. The project is in line with the EU Work Plan for Sport, promoting sustainability and inclusion in winter sports.
The “European Week of Winter Sport” initiative is proof of how sport can be a tool for positive change, engaging people of different ages and cultures towards healthier and more sustainable lifestyle.
