SPORT

BSDA will coordinate SPORT project
18.09.2024
The SPORT - Strengthening Potentials through Opportunities, Respect, and Team-spirit project is designed to advance inclusivity and accessibility in sports, with a particular emphasis on individuals with intellectual disabilities. It aims to nurture cross-cultural collaboration and the exchange of ideas within the sphere of inclusive sports. Through various activities such as capacity-building workshops tailored for coaches and sports administrators, the project focuses on inclusive sports practices, adapted physical education, and strategies for engaging the community.
Additionally, the #BeInclusive SPORT Camps, set up in Bulgaria and Turkey, aim to provide individuals with intellectual disabilities the chance to participate in diverse sports, thereby promoting physical health, social inclusion, and self-esteem. The project also includes exchange programs to facilitate the sharing of knowledge and best practices among partners, and awareness campaigns that leverage digital platforms and community events to underscore the significance of inclusivity in sports.

SPORT intends to fortify collaboration among participant organizations and their staff, promoting the exchange of effective practices in sports inclusion. This includes the introduction of innovative tools and resources for sports clubs and organizations across the EU to enhance the inclusion of individuals with disabilities. The project will also enrich a practical repository of tools aimed at empowering sports professionals to engage more individuals with intellectual disabilities in their activities. These resources will be published as Open Educational Resources (OERs), accessible to sports entities, educational institutions, local governments, NGOs, and national bodies.

Through a series of local, national, and international initiatives, this collaborative partnership will emphasize knowledge transfer and the sharing of exemplary practices in sports inclusion. SPORT is set to augment the existing body of knowledge, skills, and practices among both directly and indirectly involved sports organizations and individuals. All project activities are designed to serve as OERs, available to all interested parties.

The project's primary goals include ensuring high-quality sports mobility for individuals with intellectual disabilities, providing new tools and resources for sports professionals to utilize sports as a medium for inclusion, socialization, and empowerment, and compiling these insights into the SPORT guide as a hands-on reference for working with individuals with disabilities in sports settings. This will not only increase the capacity of participating organizations but also elevate awareness about the intrinsic value of sports and physical activities in fostering personal, professional, and social growth, particularly emphasizing the benefits for individuals with disabilities. SPORT will highlight the health-promoting effects of physical activity and disseminate the collective knowledge, innovative tools, and best practices garnered, thereby inspiring further collaborative efforts and synergies within the field.

SPORT target group:
The primary focus of the SPORT project is on individuals with intellectual disabilities living in Bulgaria and Turkey. The participants targeted for involvement in the project's activities include those residing in community service institutions within these countries, as well as those under the care of assistants, parents, or relatives. The ultimate beneficiaries of this initiative are the partner organizations and participating sport experts, which will gain enhanced capacity in inclusive practices, and the individuals facing various challenges in their daily lives. Through their participation in SPORT, these individuals will embark on an empowering journey through sports activities, fostering a sense of belonging and integration within the broader European community.

SPORT outputs:
The project will empower 150 individuals with intellectual disabilities (ID) from Bulgaria and Turkey through national sports actions and 60 individuals during international sports events. Enhanced training programs will be developed through practical capacity-building workshops, equipping coaches and sports administrators with skills for inclusive sports practices. Inclusive #BeInclusive SPORT Camps will be organized in both countries, offering individuals with ID opportunities to engage in sports, promoting physical health, social inclusion, and self-esteem. A knowledge exchange platform will facilitate best practice sharing through study visits and joint training sessions. Awareness campaigns will be conducted using digital platforms and community events to advocate for inclusivity in sports and inspire broader societal support. Sustainable networks will be established among sports organizations, educational institutions, and NGOs, ensuring the continuity of these initiatives, complemented by a resource toolkit and an online platform for ongoing education and community engagement.

The SPORT project is co-funded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union and will be implemented by Bulgarian Sports Development Association (BSDA) and Kargenc Club.
