BSDA is partner in Youth Sports Fair Chance project
09.11.2018
The topic of Youth Sports Fair Chance project is to combat violence and tackle racism, discrimination and intolerance in sports and around (e.g. at sporting events).

The project aims to identify, develop and compile sports-related best practices which optimally contribute to the dissemination of messages of respect, the fight against discrimination and racism and the prevention of all forms of violence in sports.

The project will also promote sports values as a key element for the fight against intolerance, racism and other forms of discrimination, and draw attention to the relevance of sports for an integral development of youngsters.

Sport is a human activity resting on fundamental social, educational and cultural values. It is a factor making for integration, involvement in social life, tolerance, acceptance of differences and playing by the rules. For many people, especially for young people sport is a part of their identity. Nowadays many sports are still confronted with a number of threats such as violence, racism, discrimination and intolerance, among others. Those threats challenge the fundamental values of European political and cultural integration so there is a need for training of teaching professionals (e.g. physical education teachers) and coaches about the prevention of discrimination and violence in sport in schools and sports clubs.

Physical education teachers (PE teachers) indicate the following aspects as significant and to be complemented to their knowledge: innovative technologies for the presentation of topics related to violence and discrimination in front of children and adolescents, skills for dealing with incidents, forms of partnership and interaction with parents. It is necessary to develop policies, to update plans and system for the prevention of violence and discrimination in sport. The programs for prevention, partnerships with institutions and organizations on issues related to violence and discrimination in sport should be approbated.

Owing to project activites the competencies for PE teacher needed to predict, avoid and cease violence, exclusion and intolerance through sport, using sport as conflict resolution tool, will be defined. However, violence in sport can not be fully prevented, but the implementation of quality methods of prevention can influence the improvement of the quality of training, reducing the severity and frequency of injuries and the early return to full activities. With this project we will additionaly educate PE techers how to identify, prevent and reduce all form of violence in sport, among children and to deliver extensive and high-quality prevention programs compiled in a printed material which consider the application of knowledge and skills in violence prevention. Furthermore, continuous international (regional) cooperation between PE teachers will empower them to streamline proper methodology and they will be given the opportunity to reflect and exchange on what could be a “high-quality” physical education, leading to the promotion of integration, peace, justice and equality. By raising awareness about the different forms of discrimination and violence, the teachers will develop new skills to enhance cooperation, human dignity and respect among their students.

The Best Practice Research Report, which will be developed during the project cycle, will contain a review of the current status of the awareness of elementary school pupils and will eventually form the basis for the development of the educational material and the teaching plans for the PE teachers. A group of experts from all partner countries will study and review the material and will mentor PE teachers in their own countries about the principles of the project and the methodology of the material they must use for the training of the children.

One of the project output will be educational material for Training Module, with well structured and detailed presentation of interactive games, examples that could motivate children to actively participate in groups and comprehend, through play, with special focus on the value of tolerance and the results of violence and discrimination. This publication will be disseminated among partners and also EU members. Regular news on the project will be posted on EU website and included in its newsletters, and on EU online platform.

The overall objective is contribution to decrease violence, racism and discrimination in sport through the implementation of new sports-related best practices dedicated to PE teachers (physical education teachers) and elementary school pupils.

The specific objectives of the action are:
1. Development and implementation of measures to tackle violence and racism in sport through eduactional methods across Europe
2. Strengthening of the capacity (skills and competencies) of PE teachers for combating violence and tackle racism, discrimination and intolerance in sport
3. Strengthening the awareness of key stakeholders (PE teacher, sport associations, local or national sport authorities) about the importance of new measures for combating violence and tackle racism, discrimination and intolerance in sport
4. Support inter-cultural dialogue, sense of belonging and participation through key sport competencies values in youth sports and prevent violence, discrimination and intolerance
5. Creating a network of experts and organisations to prevent violence in sport
6. Raising awareness of elementary school pupils on combating violence and tackle racism, discrimination and intolerance in sport.

Project will design a learning methodology oriented to grassroots sports in order to reduce violence, racism and discrimination, by promoting the recognition of sports values and teaching to the main target groups (elementary school children, PE teachers). For this purpose, it will be designed two kind of learning materials: development of learning modules to educate on values to be used to by the PE teachers and elementary pupils.

The innovative aspect of this project is based on the designing of new educational tools based on Infographics (are graphic visual representations of information, data or knowledge intended to present information quickly and clearly). Infographics can improve cognition by utilizing graphics to enhance the human visual system’s ability to see patterns and trends. Similar pursuits are information visualization, data visualization, statistical graphics, information design, or information architecture. Infographics have evolved in recent years to be for mass communication, and thus are designed with fewer assumptions about the readers' knowledge base than other types of visualizations) that will be used to reach these target groups through training activities.

Through the project activities we will activity involve PE teachers and pupils in project activities through the development and implementation of educational materials, linking experts, exchanging examples of good practice, encouraging co-operation and preparing joint initiatives / projects / programs related to the prevention and combating of violence in sport and sport (before, during and after sports events), the fight against discrimination and intolerance and the promotion of tolerance and multiculturalism.

Project is co-funded by Erasmus+ Sport programme of the European Union.
