BSDA is partner in SUN project
07.01.2021
The objective of the “Sports, health and fun for preschool children / SUN” project is to contribute to awareness raising of the need for physical activity as basis of healthy lifestyle by changing habits of identified target groups (preschool children and their families) both in urban and rural areas. The projects goal is to stimulate children, in the first place those with obesity, overweight and low physical activity, and their parents to embrace this new kind of lifestyle as a routine, and then transfer the acquired healthy habits in later age. Children, engaged in sports activities at very young age are more likely to remain active later in life and are less likely to become obese or suffer from linked chronical diseases. The duration of the project is 24 months and the initiative is involving 7 partner organizations from 6 European countries - Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Italy, Portugal and Slovenia.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), childhood obesity is one of the most serious public health challenges of the 21st century. The problem is global and is steadily affecting many low- and middle-income countries. The prevalence has increased at an alarming rate. Globally, in 2016 the number of overweight children under the age of five is estimated to be over 41 million. Overweight and obesity are defined as ''abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that presents a risk to health''. Without intervention, overweight and obese children are likely to stay obese into adulthood and more likely to develop non communicable diseases like diabetes and cardiovascular diseases at a younger age. Overweight and obesity, as well as their related diseases, are largely preventable. Prevention of childhood obesity therefore needs high priority. The most effective way to prevent childhood obesity is to raise awareness among families about importance of healthy diet and to engage children at an early age into regular physical activity.

The “Sports, health and fun for preschool children / SUN” project also aims to help in implementation of eight key areas of the EU Action Plan on Childhood Obesity 2014-2020:
• Support a healthy start in life;
• Promote healthier environments, especially in schools and pre-schools;
• Make the healthy option the easier option;
• Restrict marketing and advertising to children;
• Inform and empower families;
• Encourage physical activity;
• Monitor and evaluate;
• Increase research.
