The #BeActive Awards are part of the European Commission’s annual European Week of Sport campaign. The awards recognise and celebrate individuals and organisations who have demonstrated their commitment to promoting active lifestyles across Europe. The #BeActive Awards 2023 are designed to celebrate organisations and projects that have thrivingly promoted sport and physical activity throughout Europe and in 2023 include four categories:
- Across Generations award: this award, first launched in 2022, is intended to honour projects that encourage inter-generational sport.
- Workplace award: This award rewards outstanding workplace initiatives in the workplace that motivate staff members to #BeActive.
- Local Hero award: This award celebrates individual success in inspiring others to #BeActive.
- Education award: The goal of this award is to show how education may motivate children to #BeActive outside of the usual sports and physical activities they participate in during the school day.
Project #Sport4Cancer is an initiative co-funded by the Erasmus+ program aiming to apply accumulated experience in organizing large local sports events involving institutions from several European countries working in this field. A major sports event was held with the assistance of volunteers from the participating countries in the project, focusing on promoting physical activity within society and encouraging the social inclusion of individuals with oncological diseases and disabilities, as well as those whose participation in physical activities is challenging.
The #Sport4Cancer project is one of the three finalists in 2023 in the "Across Generations" category, reflecting the significant sports event held within the project framework from April 18th to April 24th, 2023, in Mar Menor (Murcia region) - an ideal place for beach and water sports with excellent facilities, professionals, and a perfect climate. The event included sports competitions, exhibitions, and entertaining sports activities aimed at encouraging citizen participation. The goal was to gather more than 10,000 people from different countries. Over 60 sports activities took place simultaneously, including horse riding, fishing, water polo, kayaking, diving, sailing, canoeing, cycling, boxing, judo, artistic and aesthetic gymnastics, archery, orienteering, and more.
The event was planned as an activity to strengthen social and solidarity interests, to raise funds for the Spanish Association for Cancer Fighting, to promote the activities of the "Never Surrender" foundation, which encourages strength training among cancer patients to improve their quality of life, as well as for the "Aladina" foundation. Some representatives from the Bulgarian group, supported by the Bulgarian Sports Development Association, are also active in their daily lives in Bulgaria. The ladies participate in dance therapy for women with breast cancer, "Dance with Health," held by the "Alegria" club in Dobrich for several years.
