In the period 10-22 November 2024, 10 coaches and administrators from sports institutions in Bulgaria took part in a specialized training held in Massachusetts and Rhode Island, organized as part of the US State Department for Sports Diplomacy initiative – Sport for Social Change and kindly hosted by PH International. The program aimed to share best practices and promote the inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities in education and sport through innovative approaches such as Unified Sports.
The delegation participated in interactive sessions on Unified Sports, observed adapted PE and sport lessons in different schools and engaged in practical training sessions with athletes. The training included sessions at the Special Olympics headquarters in Massachusetts and Rhode Island, where opportunities to adapt these programs to the Bulgarian context were discussed. A number of panel discussions were also held with experts in the field of physical education and adaptive sport. The program not only enriched the professional experience of the participants but also inspired new ideas for social change through sport in Bulgaria.
Highlights of the program included visits to high schools where unified sports practices were held, participation in sporting events, and inspirational moments such as a visit to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and a Boston Celtics game.
