BSDA held a Bet on Sport training

10.04.2025
On April 10, 2025, in Sofia, Bulgarian sports development association (BSDA) held the first training session for professionals under the European project Bet on Sport. The event brought together coaches, sports educators, and psychologists who explored innovative methods of using sport as a tool to combat gambling addiction, particularly in relation to sports betting.
The Bet on Sport project, co-funded by the European Union’s Erasmus+ programme, addresses the growing issue of gambling addiction across Europe. Through the positive influence of physical activity, the initiative aims to support the recovery of individuals struggling with addiction by encouraging their participation in sports.
“Sport is not just an alternative to gambling – it is a powerful therapeutic tool that builds discipline, social skills, and mental resilience,” said Ivaylo Zdravkov, a board member of BSDA.
The project is being implemented in seven countries – Bulgaria, Romania, Spain, Greece, Finland, Italy, and Turkey – and will train over 200 professionals from the fields of sports, psychology, and addiction treatment. Key project activities include:
• Developing an online training course for effective work with individuals facing gambling problems;
• Running pilot sports programs in participating countries;
• Launching national awareness campaigns about the risks of gambling.
The project will run for 28 months with the support of the Erasmus+ programme. Expected outcomes include the development of sustainable methodologies and the promotion of cross-sector partnerships in the fight against gambling addiction.
