22.11.2022
On the 22nd of November, 2022, in Boyana National Football Base, Bulgaria, the first meeting within the framework of the Council of Europe initiative – Start to talk was held, during which measures and policies for protection of children in sports were discussed, as well as the current models and key elements needed for the development of the roles of child protection officers, such as skills, knowledge and individual experience. Ivaylo Zdravkov – board member of BSDA, took part in the meeting, on behalf of the Bulgarian sports development association.
Sport is a means of self-expression and realization, as well as a force in favor of citizenship and solidarity, while at the same time violence against children during sports activities still represents a serious obstacle and barrier to more mass participation in sports and physical activity in organized and systematic sports activities in our sports clubs. These barriers operate at multiple levels (verbal, physical, sexual, emotional, psychological, social, cultural, organizational, economic, mediational, etc.) and are collectively perceived as an overarching negative culture that permeates every young athlete's career.
The initiative, which the Ministry of Youth and Sports leads in Bulgaria, aims to counter abuse, violence and harassment directed at child athletes in EU sports clubs through a comprehensive approach that brings together past and present efforts and forces to combat this problem to strengthen the overall sport governance systems to deal with it. The innovative aspect of the project lies in the attempt to strengthen the commitment of all the individual beneficiaries by taking on the problem and supporting each other.
