INTERNATIONAL HAPPY BONES MEETING WAS HELD IN BARCELONA
03.12.2022
In the period 01-03 December 2022, the Autonomous University of Barcelona hosted the final meeting of the Happy Bones initiative, which is co-funded by the Erasmus+ programme and is jointly implemented by Universtà degli Studi di Roma Foro Italico (Italy), Istituto Europeo per lo Sviluppo Socio Economico (Italy), Alexandre Ioan Cuza University of Iasi (Romania), Gazi University (Turkey), Fundació Salut i Envelliment (Spain) and Bulgarian sports development association (Bulgaria).
Considering the needs to encourage patients at risk or suffering from osteoporosis to be physically active, as well as to train sports and health professionals on how to encourage them, the HAPPY BONES project developed and piloted an innovative osteoporosis exercise protocol for osteopenic/osteoporotic, immobile persons aged 50-65 years, in order to support their inclusion in regular physical activity and, as a consequence, to increase their quality of life (physiologically and psychologically). In the period October 2021 – April 2022, a pilot program was held in Sofia, in which 24 people took part. The program gave the opportunity to test the innovative Happy Bones protocol in practice.

As part of the initiative, follow-up trainings were also held for sports and health professionals to implement the protocol and include more people aged 50-65 in various forms of regular physical activity. As a result, those who wish can participate in adapted programs in Sofia, Burgas, Plovdiv and Dobrich.

HAPPY BONES PROJECT CONTRIBUTED TO:
• The development and promotion of an innovative osteoporosis exercise protocol for osteopenic/osteoporotic sedentary women aged 50-65 and involving them in a moderate exercise and as a consequence, to increase their quality of life (in physiological and psychological terms);
• Trained coaches and experts in physical education with specific skills in the participating countries in order to standardize the osteoporosis exercise protocol and make it transferable and replicable;
• Compared the pilot program attendance in two different settings (workplace and sports organization) in order to analyze which is the best solution to promote regular physical activity.

Physical activity in women in menopause: a collaborative partnership for active lifestyles for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis / HAPPY BONES project is co-funded under the Erasmus+ programme of the European Union and is implemented in Bulgaria by the Bulgarian sports development association (BSDA).
