#BeActiveTogether inclusive Sport Camp in Sofia
17.05.2026
From May 15–17, 2026, Sofia hosted the international #BeActiveTogether Sport Camp – an inspiring initiative dedicated to inclusion, friendship, and active participation through sport. The camp brought together participants from Bulgaria and Greece, including persons with intellectual disabilities, coaches, social workers, volunteers, and project coordinators. The event was organized by the Bulgarian Sports Development Association in partnership with AETOI Thessalonikis within the framework of the #BeActiveTogether project, co-funded by the Erasmus+ programme of the European Union and kindly hosted in the National Sports Academy “Vassil Levski”.
Over three unforgettable days, participants experienced the power of sport as a universal language that creates confidence, joy, and meaningful human connections beyond all barriers. A key role was also played by the team of BSDA volunteers, as well as the experts in the field of Adapted Physical Activity and Sport from the National Sports Academy “Vasil Levski,” who contributed their professionalism to the high-quality conduct of the sports activities and the creation of a safe and supportive environment for all participants.
The camp programme combined sport, teamwork, and cultural experiences across some of Sofia’s iconic locations. Activities officially started with an inclusive basketball 3x3 tournament hosted at the National Sports Academy “Vassil Levski”, gathering 40 participants with intellectual disabilities from Bulgaria and Greece who competed side by side in an atmosphere of encouragement, teamwork, and mutual support. The athletes from Bulgaria who took part in the #BeActiveTogether tournament were representatives of the Sports Club “United Sport for All” and the 95th Secondary School “Prof. Ivan Shishmanov”.
The second day continued with a bowling activity focused on cooperation and social interaction, followed by the adapted starts at the National Sports Academy “Vasil Levski” as part of the “New Stars” athletics tournament, which was organized to an exceptionally high standard by Sports Club KLASA and the tournament director, Assoc. Prof. Plamen Nyagin,. More than 60 participants took part in the shot put, 100 m, and 200 m disciplines, celebrating effort, perseverance, and personal achievement rather than focusing solely on competitive results. The event demonstrated how adapted and grassroots sport can create equal opportunities for everyone to feel part of the team and showcase their potential. The following organizations took part in the adapted competitions: SC “Cherno More-2005”, SC SEN Sport Sambo for Development, CSEN “P.R. Slaveykov”, SC “United Sport for All”, SC “Sunny Kids”, SC “Unity and Inclusion”, SC “BG and Sport for All”, SC “Adapted Sports”, Innovation Association, SC “Golden Team”, and SC APAS.
On the final day, the international group took part in the #BeActiveTogether Sofia City Challenge – an interactive city activity designed to encourage teamwork, communication, exploration, and intercultural exchange while discovering the spirit and history of Sofia together.
Throughout the camp, participants from Bulgaria and Greece shared not only sport activities, but also emotions, stories, laughter, and unforgettable moments that demonstrated the true meaning of inclusion. For many of the participants with intellectual disabilities, the international camp represented a unique opportunity to travel, meet new friends from another country, and experience the feeling of belonging to a wider European community.
The #BeActiveTogether project continues to demonstrate how sport can serve as a powerful tool for social inclusion, empowerment, and independent participation in society. Through international mobility, adapted physical activity, and shared experiences, the initiative contributes to building a more open, supportive, and inclusive Europe for persons with intellectual disabilities.
