The first European Week of Winter Sports has come to an end

10.02.2025
The European Week of Winter Sports (#BeActiveWinter), which is co-funded by the Erasmus+ programme of the European Union, concluded with great success, featuring two key events in Bulgaria – a snowboarding experience in Chepelare and a short-track skating session at the Winter Sports Palace in Sofia. These initiatives not only inspired young athletes but also highlighted the importance of physical activity and making winter sports accessible to people of all ages.
Throughout the week, Bulgaria hosted a variety of winter events, from sunrise ski tours in Pamporovo and snow games for children in kindergartens to dynamic hockey and short-track training sessions in Sofia. Hundreds of citizens took part in the initiatives, embracing the magic of winter sports and the spirit of #BeActiveWinter. The European Week of Winter Sports will return next year, from February 1–8, offering even more opportunities for activity and winter adventures.
In the final days of the campaign, the “Mechi Chal” slope in Chepelare became the stage for an exciting sports event designed for the youngest winter sports enthusiasts. The “Snowboarding for Kids” initiative provided young participants with a chance to experience this thrilling sport in a fun and supportive environment. Under the guidance of experienced instructors, they learned basic techniques, felt the excitement of gliding on snow, and built confidence on the slopes. The event was supported by the “Olympic Hopes” Sports School and the Rozhen-Chepelare Sports Club, emphasizing the importance of introducing children to winter sports at an early age and encouraging them to continue their development in the field.
The final of the European Week of Winter Sports took place on February 8th at the Winter Sports Palace in Sofia with the event “Short Track – Speed is Fun” that attracted dozens of children and young people eager to experience the thrill of fast skating. Organized by the Ice Skating Club “Ice Stars”, the demonstration and open training session allowed participants to learn the basics of this dynamic sport while navigating a specially designed obstacle course. Every participant received a medal for their enthusiasm and effort, and they also had the opportunity to meet professional athletes and coaches.
The successful launch of the first-ever European Week of Winter Sports proved that winter sports can be accessible, inclusive, and enjoyable for all. As part of this European initiative, Bulgaria organized numerous events that inspired hundreds of people to stay active during the winter. From sunrise ski tours in Pamporovo to hockey training and snow games in kindergartens, #BeActiveWinter has set the foundation for a new tradition that supports sports and sustainable development.
We eagerly look forward to the next edition of the European Week of Winter Sports, promising even more exciting moments and new opportunities for winter sports lovers!
