European week of winter sports with a second edition in 2026

Between September 8–11, 2025, an international meeting took place in Berlin, Germany, bringing together sports organizations from 8 countries, which in February 2026 will organize the second edition of the European Week of Winter Sport – an initiative co-funded by the European Union’s Erasmus+ programme, aimed at encouraging participation in sports and physical activity during the winter months. After the success of the pilot edition of the European Week of Winter Sports in 2025, the campaign will once again be held next year from February 1–8, 2026 in Belgium, Bulgaria, Germany, Italy, Croatia, Luxembourg, Slovenia, and Spain.
The coordinator of #BeActiveWinter for Bulgaria is Bulgarian sports development association, as our country was one of the most active participants in the pilot edition held in January this year, involving Red Star Sofia, the Sports School “Olympic Hopes,” SC “Rozhen-Chepelare,” Ice Skating Club “Ledeni Zvezdi,” the Sunday School at the “Nativity of Christ” Church, Zi Sport – Zdravka Ilieva, Ice Hockey Club “Levski,” reSTARTzona82 Pamporovo, SKLA “Zlaten Otbor” – Svishtov, Kindergarten 85 “Rodina” – Sofia.
WHAT IS EWWS?
• EWWS is an annual week of movement dedicated to promoting winter sports
• WHY: to encourage greater participation in physical activity and sports during the winter months
• WHERE: in 8 European countries
• WHEN: February 1–8, 2026
• WHO: sports organizations, youth organizations, towns, municipalities, and motivated individuals
• HOW: through public events that highlight the benefits of winter sports
During the European Week of Winter Sports, organizations and individuals have the opportunity to host one or more events that engage citizens in a fun and active way. The initiative is part of a larger European campaign for more Europeans to take up sport and offers a unique opportunity for local communities to be part of something meaningful, with a direct impact on the health and quality of life of citizens. Schools, universities, municipalities, national and international organizations, and other interested stakeholders with the capacity to organize local events can all take part in the European Week of Winter Sports. Event organizers in each country will receive marketing and promotional materials, support and guidance, as well as opportunities for active promotion of their organization, city, or municipality at both national and international level.
Event registration is already open, and until December 31, 2025, organizers can submit their information at https://wintersportweek.com/event-registration/, in order to be included in the calendar of the European Week of Winter Sports 2026.
