On November 10, 2025, Bulgarian sports development association (BSDA) held a training session in Sofia as part of the international project “European Week of Winter Sport – EWWS”, aimed at promoting physical activity during the winter season and developing sustainable sports practices. The event brought together coaches, sports professionals, and experts who discussed opportunities to make winter sports more popular as an accessible, healthy, and environmentally responsible form of physical activity. The discussions emphasized the role of sport as a tool for combating climate change and raising awareness about environmental protection.
The EWWS project seeks to make winter sports more accessible and eco-friendly by highlighting their importance for people’s physical, emotional, and mental well-being. The initiative aims to unite sports communities across Europe around the ideas of sustainability and social inclusion, while encouraging the organization of zero-impact events that respect the environment.

Key activities within the project include organizing the European Week of Winter Sports (#BeWinterActive Week), developing guides and video tutorials on how to host sustainable sporting events, and training local ambassadors from each participating country. Additionally, pilot events and contests are going to be held to recognize the best green practices and promotional videos dedicated to winter sports and their connection to nature conservation.

The materials and campaigns produced through the project are going to be shared widely among sports organizations, coaches, and experts across Europe to promote knowledge exchange and the development of sustainable approaches to winter sports and tourism. The project fully aligns with the European Union Work Plan for Sport, which emphasizes sustainability, inclusion, and innovation. “The European Week of Winter Sports is a great example of how sport can be a driving force for positive change, engaging people of all ages and backgrounds in a healthier and more responsible lifestyle,” said Ivaylo Zdravkov from Bulgarian sports development association.
