Dissemination event under the Strong Mind for Success project
02.10.2024
On the 2nd of October 2024, coaches, students and young football players from the “Vasil Levski” NSA School officially started their training sessions in support of the SMS – Strong Mind for Success initiative. During the event the participants received specially developed #SMS handbooks created within the project. These handbooks provide important mental health resources and are aimed at raising awareness of the importance of mental wellbeing among young athletes.
The SMS – Strong Mind for Success project is co-funded by the Erasmus+ programme and aims to support the development of sports organisations in the context of mental health. The initiative targets young footballers and athletes, providing them with a platform for learning and networking for future activities on the topic. It covers key moments in the psychological development of athletes, particularly in the period up to the age of 18 when mental wellbeing is essential for their successful sporting career.

The project involves a partnership between three different EU countries – Bulgaria, Italy and Slovenia. The leading organisation is the Bulgarian sports development association and the partners are the Italian organisation L'ORMA and the Endorfin sports club from Slovenia. Together they share experience and know-how in project and sport management, providing innovative methods to improve mental health among young athletes.

The main objective of the project is to look at how mental health can support sporting success and prepare young footballers for the professional arena. According to the European Mental Health Action Plan, awareness of these issues is crucial for achieving quality results both on and off the field. The project will analyse the links between sport and mental health, focusing on how coaches and managers can use mental wellbeing to enhance the performance of their teams.

The duration of the project is 24 months, during which a number of trainings, events and initiatives aimed at promoting the mental health of young athletes were organised. Mental health professionals were involved in the training process to ensure a holistic approach to the preparation of the players, covering both their physical and mental fitness.
