A colorful adapted basketball training session

21.03.2025
In Sofia, during a training session of the Unified Basketball NSA, Bulgarian sports development association celebrated the World Down Syndrome Day in a special way. More than 40 athletes with intellectual disabilities, along with their partners and coaches, celebrated this special day together by wearing colorful socks – a symbol of diversity, rights, and opportunities for all.
March 21 is recognized as World Down Syndrome Day, a time to raise awareness and encourage community support from parents, friends, teachers, and specialists worldwide. The date was chosen symbolically, reflecting the uniqueness of Down syndrome, which is characterized by an extra copy of the 21st chromosome. Children born with this condition are often referred to as “sunny” because of their remarkable ability to radiate love, joy, and warmth. They share the same interests as their peers and often have a strong passion for creative activities such as painting and music. For their development, family support and love are crucial. A personalized educational approach, focusing on their strengths, helps them achieve significant progress, gain independence, and develop professional skills in fields that excite them.
BSDA actively promotes the inclusion of individuals with intellectual disabilities through sports activities. This includes various initiatives such as #BeInclusiveWaterPolo, #BeActiveTogether, and #SPORT, which are co-funded by the European Union’s Erasmus+ programme. These projects aim to provide equal opportunities for participation in sports, including for people with disabilities.
