Inclusive sports event during the European Week of Sport

From 23 to 30 September 2024, the European Week of Sport, an initiative of the European Commission under the motto #BeActive, inspires thousands of people across Europe to get involved in sport and physical activity. The event aims to raise awareness about the importance of an active lifestyle and encourage citizens to move more.
In Bulgaria, Bulgarian sports development association, in partnership with the Adapted Physical Activity and Sport Sector at the "Vasil Levski" National Sports Academy and the CC of SAFAOT organized an inclusive multi-sport event for people with disabilities on the 27th of September 2024 in Sofia. The event provided an opportunity for inclusive sports activity under the slogan #BeInclusive, sharing the emotion of the European Week of Sport.

The event included various activities (bocce, field hockey, pickleball, active games) that allowed the participants to enjoy the sport and discover new opportunities for an active life. The organizers emphasized the importance of sport for the health and well-being of society and sought to ensure equal access to sporting activities for all.

The inclusive event was attended by more than 65 people with disabilities from the Day Centre for Adults with Disabilities "St. Marina", the Centre for Children and Youth with Disabilities "Hristo Botev" – Sofia, the Sixth Auxiliary School – Sofia, State facility for adults with intellectual disabilities in the town of Banya – Sonic Start, SC "Adapted sports", SEN, sport, sambo for development, and over 30 participants from social institutions in Pernik and Petrich.

The initiative took place within the Train4Family project, which aims to include children with disabilities with their family in social life, to improve the quality of their lives, to make them closer with the family, to make them included in sport recreation and consuming healthy diet by creating an environment which enables their development. As part of the project, families will be educated under the guidance of trainers/coaches, and educational content available on the platform as well as in the manuals on methods of implementing sports for children with various types of physical or intellectual disabilities. Train4Family is co-funded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union and will be implemented by an international consortium from Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Turkey, Italy, Slovenia and Spain.

The Ministry of Youth and Sports is organizing the European Week of Sport #BeActive for the tenth consecutive year and Bulgarian sports development association has been a partner of the campaign since its inception. In the period 23-30 September, the initiative will offer a host of events to promote active sports, improve the physical activity of the population and promote healthy diet.
