European Week of Sport #BeActive 2026 kicks off in Sofia

On September 23rd, 2026, the official opening of the European Week of Sport #BeActive 2026 took place in the area in front of the Ivan Vazov National Theatre in Sofia. The European Commission initiative runs from 23 to 30 September and encourages people of all ages and abilities to be physically active and discover ways of exercising that suit them. In Bulgaria, the national coordinator of the campaign is the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
The official opening brought together citizens, representatives of sports organisations and institutions, prominent Bulgarian athletes, and ambassadors of the initiative. The event was officially opened by Minister of Youth and Sports Encho Keryazov, while the agenda featured sports demonstrations, training sessions, challenges, and initiatives promoting an active and healthy lifestyle.
Bulgarian sports development association (BSDA), which has been among the key partners of the European Week of Sport in Bulgaria for many years, took part in the opening event by presenting opportunities for more accessible sport and a more inclusive sporting environment. In front of citizens and representatives of sports organisations, BSDA presented the “Sport Near You” platform, available at www.bulsport.bg. The platform brings people and sport closer together by making it easier to discover sports activities and opportunities for physical activity in their local area. BSDA’s participation and the presentation of the platform were also part of the official agenda of the #BeActive exhibition dedicated to a healthy lifestyle.
The European initiative #UpSkillingCoaches, supported by the Erasmus+ programme, was also presented as part of the event. It focuses on developing coaching skills and promoting equal opportunities in sport. Visitors also had the opportunity to learn more about the initiative’s petition, which aims to create more opportunities for women coaches and promote a more equal sporting environment.
The European Week of Sport continues with initiatives in Sofia and across the country. On the 26th of September, the area in front of the National Palace of Culture will host the #BeActive Sports Village, featuring more than 40 sports federations, clubs, and partners, followed by the #BeActive Night of Sport. BSDA’s participation in #BeActive 2026 continues the organisation’s long-standing work to promote physical activity, access to sport, and the use of sport as a tool for education, inclusion, and development.
