The project SAFE SPORT – Cybersecurity for Women Athletes is an Erasmus+ Sport co-funded initiative dedicated to promoting digital safety and cybersecurity awareness among women in sports. It is coordinated by the Association of National Sport Leaders Network from North Macedonia in partnership with Beautiful Minds Academy from Serbia, Unicis.Tech OU from Estonia, and the Bulgarian Sports Development Association from Bulgaria. The project runs for twelve months and it is co-funded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union.
SAFE SPORT was created in response to the growing digital challenges faced by women athletes across Europe, including cyberbullying, online harassment, identity theft and digital exploitation. These forms of online violence have a profound impact on young women, particularly in regions where digital protection policies and cybersecurity education are still developing. The initiative aims to build a safer digital environment in sport by combining the expertise of sport professionals and technology experts, empowering women and coaches with the tools and confidence to protect themselves online.
Through its activities, the project will develop a Cybersecurity Toolkit designed to integrate digital safety education within sport-based learning. This resource will provide accessible and practical guidance on how athletes, trainers and sport organizations can prevent, recognize and respond to online threats. In addition, educators and coaches from the partner countries will be trained to implement the toolkit, ensuring that knowledge reaches the grassroots level where support is most needed. Over the course of the project, more than 300 young female athletes aged between 15 and 20 will take part in socio-sport sessions aimed at improving their awareness, resilience and ability to navigate the digital world securely.
SAFE SPORT is strongly aligned with the European Union’s efforts to promote gender equality, digital transformation and safe sport environments. It contributes to the implementation of the Directive on Combating Violence Against Women (2024), the Cyber Resilience Act (2024) and the NIS2 Directive on Cybersecurity, bringing these important policy goals closer to the everyday reality of sport.
Beyond raising awareness, the project aspires to create long-term change. By strengthening the capacities of sport organizations in North Macedonia, Serbia, Bulgaria and Estonia, SAFE SPORT will help ensure that female athletes and their coaches operate in a digital environment that is both empowering and secure. It represents a significant step forward in building a European sport sector that values not only physical safety, but also digital well-being - where every woman can train, compete and communicate freely, without fear of online abuse.
