15 YEARS OF BULGARIA'S MEMBERSHIP IN THE EUROPEAN UNION

The new 28th issue of SPRINT – the sports magazine of Bulgaria, arrives with all its glory. 132 luxury pages plus 32 pages with free application, which contains 26 handbooks for organization and methodology, freely available by scanning a QR code, developed for 11 years by the Bulgarian sports development asso-ciation. Look for SPRINT from Wednesday, March 23, 2022 at the usual locations – the gas stations "Lu-koil", "Shell", "Eco", "Rompetrol" and "Nispetrol", the hypermarkets "Fantastico" and "Kaufland", the stores "Inmedio", as well as in the better locations for distributing magazines and newspapers all over the country.

A united Europe was a dream come true for few. It has become a hope for many. Today it is a necessity for all of us, said in 1954 German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer, one of the "fathers" of the European Union. And the engine of the creation of the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC), which marks the begin-ning of the union, in which on January 1st, 2022, Bulgaria celebrates the 15th anniversary of its full mem-bership.
On May 9th 1950, the French Minister of Foreign Affairs, Robert Schuman, issued the Schuman Declaration, which proposed the creation of an ECSC, which provided for the unification of the coal and steel industries of France, West Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg. The ECSC is the first of a number of supranational European institutions that would eventually become what we now call the European Union.
In the Declaration, Schuman said: "Europe will not be created all at once or with a single plan." Today, the European Union is a community of stability, democracy, security and prosperity united for GDP growth, more jobs, higher wages and pensions. Equally important are the growing internal market and domestic demand, the free movement of labor, goods, services and capital, and access to 450 million consumers.
Bulgaria applied for EU membership in the mid-1990s and has come a long way until its accession to the Union on January 1st 2007. To become an integral part of the European family, allowing the talents, ingenuity and entrepreneurial spirit of Bulgarians to flourish in building a better life and a prosperous, secure future.
Guided by the words of the French economist Jean Monnet: "There is no future for the people of Europe, except in a union", in these 15 years Bulgaria has made efforts for its European future and prospects, which reflected in sports through one of the latest EU policies. Namely, the sports policy, which was laid down for the first time in the Treaty of Lisbon (in force since 2009).
Art. 165 of the Treaty of Lisbon: "The Union shall contribute to promoting the role of sport in European life, while taking into account its specificities, structures based on voluntary participation and its social and educational function."
Based on the newly adopted policy and taking into account the importance of sport, the EU's Erasmus + financial instrument provided funding in the first programming period of the policy of 265 million euros (2014-2020). Funds have been increased in the current period to 470 million euros (2021-2027). In 2022 alone, € 70 million will be supported by sports organizations in Europe with opportunities for educational mobility, exchange of experience and capacity building.
Following the European Union's objectives within its borders to promote peace, European values and the well-being of EU citizens, membership offers freedom, security and justice without internal borders. Free movement is one of the indisputable benefits of sports organizations forgetting the harsh visa procedures before any international event. The free exchange of information, practices and experiences within the Union, as well as the joint work and partnerships for a stronger sports sector, are key policies that also contribute to the development of the field, which according to 2020 employs 1.3 million people, representing 0.7% of total employment in the European economy.
In addition to 15 years of full membership of Bulgaria in the European Community in 2022 we celebrate 35 years since the establishment of the largest program to support education, youth, culture, sports and innovation - "Erasmus +". With an annual call for project proposals, this tool helps to implement new ideas and sustainability of existing ones and we are pleased to note that Bulgaria is an active participant in these processes, hoping to contribute to positive change in the sports environment around us.
In an application to Sprint magazine, we present 26 sports handbooks, issued by BSDA. They are an important part of the Association’s work in socially significant projects and activities.
