BeInclusiveWaterPolo

Final meeting of #BeInclusiveWaterPolo took place in Sofia
03.10.2025
On October 3, 2025, Sofia hosted the final meeting of the #BeInclusiveWaterPolo project, marking the successful conclusion of an initiative that pioneered adapted water polo for people with intellectual disabilities in Bulgaria and Croatia. The project has shown that water polo can be fun, inclusive, and suitable for everyone, regardless of their abilities.
During the meeting, hosted at the office of the Bulgarian Sports Development Association (BSDA), partners reviewed the project’s implementation and outcomes, finalized the #BeInclusiveWaterPolo handbook for approval and dissemination, and discussed sustainability measures to ensure the continuation of adapted water polo activities beyond the project’s lifetime. The agenda also included financial and administrative reporting, as well as planning for long-term cooperation between the involved organizations.

Over the course of its implementation, the project delivered several key results:
• An international sports event with participants from Bulgaria and Croatia;
• A user-friendly manual with methodologies for adapted water polo;
• A series of educational videos accessible through the project’s platform;
• Engagement of sports clubs and communities, encouraging them to expand their programs towards adapted sports.

#BeInclusiveWaterPolo has represented an important step in breaking stereotypes and fostering social inclusion by creating adapted sporting environments where people with intellectual disabilities can demonstrate their skills and potential. The initiative has been implemented by three experienced partners: Bulgarian Sports Development Association (BSDA), Association of Bulgarian Swimmers (ABS), and Para Sports Association of the City of Rijeka (RSAPD). Together, they combined expertise in sports development, inclusion, and project management.

#BeInclusiveWaterPolo was co-funded by the Erasmus+ programme of the European Union and has contributed to raising awareness about the power of sport as a driver of unity, diversity, and equal opportunities.
