IOFA project

Training on inclusive orienteering within the IOFA project
09.04.2025
From April 8–9, 2025, a training on inclusive orienteering took place in Sofia, organized by the Bulgarian sports development association. The event was part of the international project “IOFA – Inclusive Orienteering for All”, co-funded by the European Union’s Erasmus+ programme.
The participants – coaches, athletes, and sports event organizers – were introduced to Trail Orienteering (Trail-O), a discipline that enables people with disabilities to participate in the sport on an equal footing with everyone else. The first day focused on theoretical preparation, including the principles of inclusion, routes adaptation, and the rules of Trail-O. On the second day, the acquired knowledge was put into practice through the creation and testing of a model route with control points and a simulated competition.

The IOFA project aims to make orienteering accessible to all, especially to people with disabilities, and to support athletes and organizations working with them. Through training and the exchange of best practices, it brings together six countries — Croatia, Italy, Spain, Bulgaria, Cyprus, and Hungary.

“Inclusive sport is a bridge to equality. Thanks to the IOFA project, Bulgaria is building its capacity in this direction and creating opportunities for an active life for everyone, regardless of the physical limitations,” the organizers shared.

The project is being implemented with the support of the European Union’s Erasmus+ programme.
