From April 11 to 13, 2025, a meeting of the partners in the international “IOFA – Inclusive Orienteering for All” project took place in Milan, Italy. The project is funded by the Erasmus+ programme of the European Union. The event was attended by representatives of organizations from Croatia, Italy, Spain, Bulgaria, Cyprus, and Hungary, united around the goal of making the sport of Trail Orienteering (Trail-O) accessible to everyone, especially people with disabilities.
THE MAIN OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT INCLUDE:
• Developing and disseminating guidelines for organizing orienteering events at the participants’ own pace, adapted for people with disabilities;
• Creating educational materials for schools, youth organizations, and sports clubs with the aim of promoting orienteering and encouraging participation, with a special focus on people with disabilities;
• Raising awareness about orienteering among the general public and decision-makers by highlighting its unique features and potential for inclusion, and advocating for its wider promotion.
During the meeting, the partners discussed and addressed the following topics:
• Challenges related to the management and coordination of the project;
• Organization of local pilot and training events in Trail-O;
• A promotional campaign for the recognition of Trail-O as an inclusive sport;
• Dissemination of the project’s results through media and partner networks.
"I believe that the IOFA project is a step toward a more inclusive future in sports. I think that everyone, regardless of their abilities, deserves to experience the joy of orienteering. Through this project, we aim to break down barriers and show that orienteering can be for everyone," shared Ivaylo Zdravkov – board member of BSDA and Viktor Fam, an active volunteer at BSDA, during the international meeting.
